Apple Pie Day

This “sweet” fundraiser began in October of 2010.  This year, our event will be held on Thursday, October 12th.

One of the main organizers, Terri Schaaf, had been making pies with her family, and word began to spread about how excellent their family’s pies were.  She thought that maybe they could utilize this same approach as a fundraiser for Lansing Christian School with a bigger production line.

A committee was then formed.  The committee, along with volunteers, began making the pies in the school’s kitchen, but they outgrew that space.   They now have their production line in the gym, all cleaned and sanitized for this event.

Many of the necessary ingredients and tools to make Apple Pie Day a success are donated or given at a lesser cost.  They receive eighty bushels of fresh apples from a Michigan Orchard, and they have a wonderful team of volunteers who help peel apples for them.

The committee has a “Crumb-Topping Crew” that comes in at 5 a.m. on the day of the event to begin making the 40+ gallons of homemade topping. The Lansing Christian School moms and dads donate their time and energy to help in this assembly line event.

Every year the expenses are underwritten, and all the profits are for Lansing Christian School.

The Apple Pie Day Committee looks for 100 volunteers to help in this event.  They have all age groups help, from parents to grandparents, and many alumni.  People come back every year, and everyone has a great time together!
